Kingsley’s Katelyn Lyon Signs to Play Softball at Bay College

KINGSLEY – Kingsley senior Katelyn Lyon has signed to play college softball at Bay College in Escanba.

“It just felt right. When I went out and met the coach and we toured the campus and stuff. It just felt kind of homey,” Lyon said.

“[Softball] has always been something i’ve just kind of done. Like it just feels normal to me so it kind of feels nice to be able to have some sense of familiarity going into college.”

Lyon has dealt with a congenital heart disease throughout her life. As an infant, doctors discovered a rare heart condition that required her to have open heart surgery at seven months old.

February is congenital heart disease awareness month, and Lyon said she hopes her story helps people understand that while there are many different types of CHDs, many of them are not as scary as they may sound and can be monitored.

Lyon is able to participate fully in sports and started playing softball when she was nine years old. She said her only restriction is the amount of weight she can lift while working out.

“It’s not as scary as it may seem. And a lot of times I feel like people are surprised when they hear that I have a heart defect because it doesn’t slow me down at this point,” Lyon said.
