Pine River Falls to Top-Seeded Hudson in Quarterfinals

KALAMAZOO — For the second time in four years, Pine River had its wrestling season end in the Div. 4 state quarterfinals against Hudson, 63-6.

The top-seeded Tigers got off to a fast start with three straight pins and eventually building a 29-0 lead. Pine River ended that run with wins by Cayden Mys at 160 and Rogan Nelson at 171. Those were the only two wins for the Bucks on Friday.

“They are the program in Division 4. Over the last 20 years they’ve got the most state titles, the most state finalists, and we’re just a couple notches below that,” Pine River head coach Terry Martin said. “So that’s what our kids need to see and determine if we’re going to go up, down or stay the same. So that’s kind of the challenge is to catch up to programs like that.”

Pine River finishes its season with a 27-12 record.

“I think I’ll remember just the support we got all year. Every meet we went to — win or lose — just had the loudest crowd and the most support from all the parents,” Mys said.
