Sault’s Roque to Compete in Gold Medal Game, Boyne’s Kuhn finishes eighth

Sault Ste. Marie’s Abby Roque scored an empty-net goal to wrap up USA’s 4-1 win over Finland in the Olympic semifinals on Monday in women’s hockey. It was her first career Olympic goal.

With the win, USA will face Canada in the Gold Medal Game on Wednesday at 11:10 p.m. (EST). Team USA lost to Canada in the preliminary round, 4-2.

On top of Roque’s performance, northern Michigan had two more local athletes competing in the Olympics Monday morning.

Boyne City’s Kaila Kuhn and Gaylord’s Winter Vinecki performed well in Women’s Aerials for Freestyle Skiing in the first qualification competition, with Kuhn finishing eighth and Vinecki finishing in 13th.

Only the top six qualify to the finals, but the seventh and eighth place finishers earn a spot in the second qualification round. Kuhn received that opportunity and finished third in that qualification to advance to the finals.

In the final, Kuhn finished in eighth place overall. Vinecki ended in 15th place overall.
