Big Rapids Returns Strong Roster from Record-Breaking Softball Team
BIG RAPIDS — The Big Rapids softball team returns eight starters from a 2021 season where the Cardinals broke their program record with 34 victories. They also made a run to the regional final before losing to Gaylord last season.
Dawn Thompson enters her 15th overall year with the program, and she has liked what she’s seen from her team so far this preseason.
“We have a kids that have put in a ton of time over the past year individually, summer teams, fall ball,” Thompson said. “So we’re really excited to see the progress from last year’s success.”
The Cardinals have two all-state players back on the roster this year with pitcher Rylie Haist, who had 24 wins last season, and first baseman Hannah Smith.
“I’m feeling pretty good. We didn’t lose much. We return pretty much everybody and should be a good season,” Haist said.
“I think we’re going to be really good this year,” Big Rapids sophomore Marissa Warren said. “It feels great honestly to come back as a team and just keep working hard.”
Big Rapids will look to start the season with a win against Morley Stanwood on the road on April 6.
