Big Rapids Sets High Goals for 2022 Girls Soccer Season

BIG RAPIDS — Big Rapids had a great 2021 season in girls soccer, ending the year with a 16-4 record along with conference and district titles.

The Cardinals want to take the next step after graduating just two seniors from a team that came close to defeat Boyne City in the regional final last year. The Ramblers won, 2-1, and eventually made it to the state championship.

“I think we’ll have more depth this year and more experience, and I expect to be back in the postseason and make a run,” Big Rapids head coach Curt Ray said.

Big Rapids featured a strong defense last year, allowing one or less goals in 17 of their 20 games. They expect that to be their strength again, especially considering how many players they have back.

“We only lost two seniors, but we have two incoming freshmen and then we mostly have all the same players,” Big Rapids junior Julia Waltz said. “So we’re going to be a good, strong team this year.”

“We want to win. We want to get better,” Big Rapids senior Emma Balahoski said. “We’re all working very hard as a team.”

Big Rapids’ first game will be against Ludington on Tuesday.  The Cardinals met the Orioles in their season opener last season, losing by one goal.
