LSSU Prepares for Northern Michigan in Mason Cup Quarterfinals

SAULT STE. MARIE – Lake Superior State will start its Mason Cup run Friday night against Northern Michigan.

The Mason Cup is the equivalent of a conference tournament for the CCHA, although with a little different format.

The Lakers will play a best-of-three series against the Wildcats with the winner advancing to the semifinals. The semifinals and championship are single elimination.

Lake Superior State is the No. 4 seed and Northern Michigan is the No. 5 seed.

The Lakers went 3-1 against the Wildcats in the regular season. Head coach Damon Whitten said the Lakers defense will have to step up against NMU.

“They’ve got a couple of guys that are right up there nationally as scoring leaders. So they’re very dangerous, very dynamic offensively,” Whitten said. “So we’ve got to be making sure we continue to have good defensive structure and awareness to our game as we have done for quite awhile. And then special teams is always important this time of year so [we need to] continue to get good penalty killing and get our power play going.”

The puck drops for game one at 6:07 p.m. on Friday night.
