Abby Roque Back in Sault Ste. Marie to Host Youth Hockey Camp

SAULT STE. MARIE – Olympian Abby Roque returned home to Sault Ste. Marie this weekend, for the first time since Christmas and since winning the silver medal with Team USA women’s hockey, to host her youth hockey camp at Big Bear Arena.

A few dozen kids laced up the skates and learned some fundamentals from one of the best on the ice. There will also be two other camps this weekend, one each day.

Roque attributes much of her success to her youth skating days.

“Nowadays, a lot of people put pressure on their kids to be the best at sports and you really do not have to be the best, you can be the best later in life. I was never the best growing up, but that is what made me better as I always wanted to improve and get better than people and have a lot of fun. That is why I am excited to see these kids. It’s great to look at them and think of yourself back in the day having so much fun playing with your friends,” said Roque.

There will be a free meet and greet Saturday at Kewadin Dream Makers Theatre from 6-8 p.m.

Roque had a successful trip to the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics where she helped USA win a silver medal in women’s hockey.
