Central Michigan Baseball Wins MAC Tournament Championship, Clinches Third Straight Trip to NCAA Tournament

MUNCIE, INDIANA – Central Michigan defeated Ball State 11-7 in Sunday’s MAC Tournament Championship game to clinch a berth in the NCAA Tournament for a third straight season (not counting 2020, when the season was canceled midway through due to Covid-19).

Central Michigan had to beat Ball State twice in a row to claim the MAC Championship as Ball State entered the championship matchup unbeaten in the double elimination tournament. The Chippewas got the first win 12-3 Saturday night, setting up the winner-take-all game on Sunday afternoon.

Things did not get off to a great start for CMU on Sunday as Ball State took a 5-1 lead after the first inning.

The Chippewas trailed 6-2 heading into the sixth inning before making a spirited comeback. Central Michigan scored two or more runs in each of the last four innings of the game.

Former Traverse City Pit Spitter Mario Camiletti hit a two-run home run in the top of the ninth for insurance and pitcher Jordan Patty slammed the door in the bottom of the ninth to seal the 11-7 victory.

Central Michigan’s Garrett Navarra was named the tournament’s MVP. As the designated hitter in Sunday’s championship game, he went 4-for-4 with a home run, three runs scored and three RBI.

The Chippewas have tied a program record with three consecutive 40-win seasons. They enter the NCAA Tournament with a 42-17 record this season.
