Glen Lake Prepares for Season Under New Head Coach
MAPLE CITY — After going 4-6 and making the playoffs last year, Glen Lake enters this season with changes to their football program. They dropped down from Division 6 to Division 8. They also switched divisions in their conference, playing new opponents this season. And they have a new head coach.
Gary Galla became the Lakers’ fourth head coach in four years. He takes over for Jerry Angers, who came out of retirement for one season to coach last year.
Galla was the Glen Lake JV coach for 10 years and varsity assistant for seven years. That familiarity has made it a smooth transition.
“I think they feel better that it’s someone you know, not somebody that’s new that they don’t know,” Galla said. “They feel a little bit more comfortable that way.”
Glen Lake makes the move in the NMFL from the Leaders Division to the Legacy Division, featuring an entirely new group of conference opponents this year. They have three similar opponents from last year: Kalkaska and Charlevoix, former conference opponents, and Frankfort, who is now a conference foe.
Glen Lake started last season 1-5, but finished the year with three straight wins to secure a playoff spot. Galla’s son, Sean, will be the senior quarterback this season. His bond with the senior class is a positive as well.
“He’s just known all of us in our senior class, so he’s been around us since we were really young. So we’ve got like that bond,” Sean Galla said.
“It’s nice just as some like familiar faces around and kind of the same routine to start the year,” Glen Lake senior Luke Hazelton said.
Glen Lake will start its season against Kalkaska on the road on Aug. 25.
