Johannesburg-Lewiston Aims to Return to Form After Injury-Riddled 2021 Season
Johannesburg-Lewiston had polar opposite seasons in 2020 and 2021.
In 2020, the Cardinals went 10-1 and reached the state semifinals. In 2021, the team failed to win a game, finishing 0-9.
The Cardinals have just five seniors on the roster this fall as they look to get back to something more closely resembling 2020. They’ll certainly hope for better health than they had a season ago.
“This is my 23rd year doing this, 10th as the head coach. Last year, we’ve never had injuries like that,” said head coach Joe Smokevitch. “You get one or two here [and there]. Last year it was 13, I looked it up. It was just [we were] snake bit it seemed last year. Our quarterback Colin Basinski saw quite a bit of time at quarterback while [Preston] Marlatt was out. So I mean we’ve got some experience in that part of it. Like I said on the offensive line, I think most or a lot of the kids return from last year.”
The Cardinals start the season against Mancelona.
Last year, the game between Johannesbur-Lewiston and Mancelona was a wild, high-scoring affair in which Mancelona came out on top, 66-42.
