Newaygo Looks to Make Playoffs for First Time Since 2019
NEWAYGO – Scott Force is the new head coach of the Newaygo football team this fall. Force is the third different head coach the team has had in the last three years.
As Force looks to bring stability to the program, the team believes it has the talent to make the playoffs this year. Newaygo went 2-7 with a very young team in 2021.
“We’re looking to win this year. We want to be a playoff team and we think we can do it,” said senior Grant Harkness. “I think a lot of teams think that we’re just down in the conference and are kind of just overlooking us. I think we can beat a lot of teams on our schedule and I think we can make the playoffs.”
Force said he’s been emphasizing his ‘three E’s’ in practices so far.
“Really we’ve been saying the three E’s. Energy, enthusiasm and excitement,” Force said. “I think the kids are really buying into that. We’re coming out here and they’re excited to be here. I’ve been around programs where it’s just ‘oh crap, it’s two-a-days.’ These kids are actually excited to start practice every day and the energy level is high. So just those three E’s have been kind of the big thing.”
Force added that he’s really excited about the talent he has at the wide receiver position this fall. Newaygo will run a spread offense but will try to establish a stronger ground game as well.
Newaygo begins its season August 26th against Kent City.
