SAULT STE. MARIE – A pair of Sault Ste. Marie softball players will be playing for a United States cup team in the Netherlands in January.
Augusta Smith and Lucy Huskey, both juniors this fall, will represent Sault Ste. Marie and the United States in a tournament against elite European teams.
The girls said they couldn’t believe they were selected.
“I never thought it would happen,” said Huskey. “I’m excited to meet the girls.”
“I didn’t believe it,” added Smith. “I thought [our coach] was playing a trick. I’m just excited to go over and meet a lof of new people and get a different perspective of the game.”
Their high school coach, Lisa Schulte, said she is beaming with pride that the two of them have been chosen.
“If I was going to pick people to represent our school and our community, these two young ladies will do a wonderful job. They’ll enjoy every moment of it and they’ll give their best effort,” Schulte said.
The girls have already started fundraising for their trip and will hold fundraisers throughout the fall.
