Remembering Vin Scully’s Legacy with a Tie Back to Michigan

The Hall of Fame and former Los Angeles Dodgers Broadcaster Vin Scully died Tuesday night.

There are countless calls from Scully, but there is one that brings the ties back to Michigan:

It was the bottom of the ninth in game one of the 1988 World Series. The Dodgers are down to the Oakland Athletics, 4-3, with Kirk Gibson appearing for his first at bat. Gibson, a Michigan State University alum and would-be Detroit Tiger was brought into the game as a pinch hitter. He had yet to appear in the game due to injuries in both of his legs.

Gibson goes on to hit a walk-off home run, doing the “impossible.” What is so memorable from this play is not the play itself, but the silence from Scully.

He gave the call, “high fly ball into right field, she is…gone” followed by nearly a minute of silence. He then states, “in a year that has been so improbable, the impossible has happened.”

Scully called 25 World Series and 12 All-Star games. He also broadcasted various football games and golf tournaments.
