Tanner Smith Takes Assistant Role with Mid Michigan Women’s Basketball, Will Remain Girls Basketball Coach at Meridian

Sanford Meridian girls basketball coach Tanner Smith has accepted a position as an assistant coach with the Mid Michigan College women’s basketball program.

However, Smith will also remain the head girls basketball coach at Sanford Meridian.

Smith said the schedules of the two teams work out well enough for him to coach with both programs. He has helped with the Sanford Meridian boys basketball team in addition to coaching the girls team in the past, so he’s no stranger to working with two teams at once.

“The game schedule, I mean, there’s only one conflict between our schedules so that kind of worked out,” Smith said.  “I’ve honestly always been involved with two teams, coaching with the girls and boys. In the last eight years, I’ve maybe missed, I can count on two hands the practices or games combined in the last eight years. So I think it’s going to be a good thing and I think I’m going to be able to balance it.”

This past winter was one of the most memorable seasons in program history for Sanford Meridian. The Mustangs won the Jack Pine conference and the program’s first district title since 1988.

Smith will join Lance Maney’s staff at Mid Michigan. Maney will be in his first year as the Lakers’ head coach.
