TC West Continues Strong Start With 4-0 Win Over Elk Rapids

TRAVERSE CITY – The Traverse City West boys soccer team improved to 4-0 on the season with a 4-0 win over Elk Rapids on Monday night.

The Titans have outscored opponents 20-1 so far this season.

Ian Robertson lead the way Monday with two goals for the Titans while Ben Carlson and Aidan Orth each added a goal apiece.

The Titans lost to the eventual Div. 1 state champions, Okemos, in the regionals last fall. In each of the two years prior to that, Traverse City West finished as state runners-up.

TC West lost talented seniors from last year’s team including Colin Blackport and Josh Hirschenberger, but the Titans have a solid senior core including Robertson, goalkeeper Trae Collins and defenseman Henrik Buttleman.

The Titans have a junior-heavy roster but many of those juniors saw meaningful playing time as sophomores.

Head coach Matt Griesinger said after the team’s 4-1 win over Oxford last week that the focus early in the season has been on building mental toughness.

“We show some really good moments of mental toughness and then we show some other times of pulling out of tackles or complaining about calls and that kind of stuff, which is all just the mental game,” Griesinger said. “So we’re really preaching the tradition of the program, right? [It is] a program that was established in ’97 and has just kept the foot on the gas.”

The Titans will start conference play on Sept. 8th against Petoskey.
