Sports Overtime Game of the Week Preview: McBain at Evart

It’s the first round of the high school football playoffs and for a third straight season, conference foes McBain and Evart clash in the first round.

Combined with the regular season meetings, Friday night will be the sixth time these two teams have battled in the last three years.

Each of the past two years, the team that won the regular season meeting proceeded to lose the playoff game.

Evart won the regular season meeting this fall and is hoping to break the “curse” of this rivalry.

“That’s what we’re going to keep practicing to do is break that curse,” said Evart senior Cole Hopkins.

“There are a lot of variables and factors that played into that last year, things that were out of our control when the time came,” said Evart head coach Pat Craven. “Those factors and variables aren’t there this year, so we’re looking to go out there and play our best game against McBain.”

With the regular season loss firmly in their memory, the McBain Ramblers are looking to flip the script once again.

“Earlier this season they ran the ball all over us and they didn’t even really throw it very well. But they’ve been pretty good at throwing the ball this year so we’ve got to be ready for that,” said McBain senior Kalvin McGillis.

“It’s a conference game in the regular season and now it’s an annual playoff game,” said McBain head coach Pat Maloney. “We just want to play our best. We’d like to change some things [from last time]. We’re going to make some changes and just play better.”
