Reed City Falls Just Short in 13-12 Semifinal Loss to Negaunee

GAYLORD – The Reed City Coyotes saw their season come to a heartbreaking end with a 13-12 loss in the Div. 6 State Semifinals on Saturday afternoon.

Reed City held a 6-0 lead at halftime thanks to a short touchdown run from Noah Morgan. After Negaunee scored to take a 7-6 lead in the third quarter, Morgan scored again early in the fourth to put Reed City on top 12-7. But Reed City was unable to convert the two-point conversion of either of its touchdowns and that proved to be a big factor.

With under three minutes to go, Negaunee’s Kai Lucar found the end zone to put Negaunee on top 13-12.

Reed City had one last chance to drive down and win the game but faced a 4th-and-long scenario with under a minute to go. Quarterback Xavier Allen completed the pass to Bryson Hughes for the first down, but Negaunee’s Nico Lukkarinen made an incredible individual play, taking the ball away as he made the tackle to give the Miners the ball back and effectively end the game.

Reed City finishes the season with an 11-2 record, a co-conference championship and district and regional championships. This was the Coyotes first trip to the state semifinals since 2017.

Negaunee will face Grand Rapids West Catholic in the Div. 6 State Championship game at Ford Field on Friday.
