Sault Ste. Marie Hockey Has High Expectations For Itself in 2022-23

SAULT STE. MARIE – The Sault Ste. Marie hockey team drops the puck on the new season on Saturday afternoon.

The Blue Devils finished 12-12-2 a season ago and are seeking their first regional championship since 2016.

But Sault Ste. Marie has high expectations for itself this season. Head coach Rick Mackie said he’s been looking forward to coaching this group of players for years.

“This is basically the group I’ve been waiting for. I got some of them last year but I saw this group grow up since they were squirts and I knew the depth that was coming,” said Mackie. “I knew, especially defensively, that this is the first time in my five years as head coach that we have six defensemen that can play in all situations. Up front we’re four lines deep. I haven’t taken four lines before so it’s a nice group of kids. They’re young still. They come every day, they work hard and they compete and they’ve got smiles on their faces and that’s the most important thing.”

Sault Ste. Marie begins the season at home against White Lake Whiteland on Saturday at 3 p.m.
